Letter to the Editor: Langworthy demonstrated leadership that transcends political divisions

Alfred Democrat applauds Congressman from NY-23 for response to tragedy

Dear Editor, 

I would like to commend Representative Nick Langworthy for his compassionate and measured response to the recent fatal plane crash in Washington, D.C. In his interview with WIVBTV he emphasized the importance of unity and support for the victims’ families during this tragic time. His call for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident reflects a commitment to transparency and accountability. By focusing on the need for bipartisan cooperation in addressing aviation safety, Rep. Langworthy demonstrated leadership that transcends political divisions. His approach serves as a reminder of the importance of coming together as a nation in the face of tragedy. 

In contrast, in a press briefing President Donald Trump blamed the crash on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) hiring policies implemented during the Biden Administration. When confronted by reporters, he provided no evidence for this claim, stating, “Because I have common sense.”  While the investigation is still ongoing, it is important to approach such tragedies with empathy and a commitment to uncovering the facts. 

It is also worth noting that U.S. commercial airspace has been among the safest in the world, with no major airline crashes since 2009. This record is a testament to the skill and dedication of air traffic controllers, pilots, safety regulators, and policymakers—including those like Rep. Langworthy—who prioritize oversight and improvements in aviation safety. Rather than undermining confidence in those who keep our skies safe, we should recognize their contributions and ensure that facts, not political narratives, guide our response to such incidents.
