ALBANY – Assemblyman Joe Sempolinski said he’s opposed to rumored changes to state Election Law that would delay special elections and said the changes are designed to disenfranchise Republican voters in New York’s 21st Congressional District.

“This is the arrogance of one-party rule in Albany, and I am 100% opposed. Governor Hochul talks a lot about ensuring the right to vote and be represented. These rumored changes to the state’s election laws will do exactly the opposite. This is a blatant attempt by the governor and members of the Democrat majority in Albany to manipulate elections through legislation and thwart voters in a congressional district who don’t vote the way they want,” Assemblyman Sempolinski said.

Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik currently represents the 21st District. She has been nominated by President Trump to serve as UN Ambassador. She could be confirmed shortly. If the majority in Albany changes New York’s Election Laws as it has been reported they are considering, her seat could remain vacant through the summer.

“Delaying a vote denies more than 750,000 New Yorkers representation in Congress. Voters have a sacred right to representation in Albany or Washington, D.C. I don’t use that language lightly. The right to vote was purchased with the blood of patriots. It is wrong and un-American to block an opportunity to vote,” Assemblyman Sempolinski said.

State Election Law requires the governor to proclaim a special election within 10 days after an office becomes vacant. It is expected that members of the majority Democratic caucus in the Assembly and Senate could propose to increase that to 15 days and also delay the date a special election is held after the governor’s proclamation.

“We shouldn’t be surprised. The governor and her allies in the Assembly and Senate have been playing with New York’s Election Laws since they took over the majority. The people of the North Country deserve a voice in Congress as soon as possible,” Assemblyman Sempolinski said.

Assemblyman Joe Sempolinski represents the 148th New York Assembly District, which consists of all of Cattaraugus and Allegany counties and portions of Steuben County. For more information, visit Assemblyman Sempolinski’s website.
