FEDS: Two guilty pleas from child predators in Western NY

Greg Hirliman of Olean NY faces 20 years, John Douglas Looney of Rochester 5 years in prison

OLEAN MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE

BUFFALO, N.Y.-U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that Greg Hirliman, 48, of Olean, NY, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo to attempted receipt of child pornography, which carries a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a maximum of 20 years, and a $250,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango, who is handling the case, stated that between September 11, 2021, and July 5, 2022, Hirliman engaged in sexual communications with a minor victim via Facebook. Hirliman made multiple requests to the victim for naked images and videos. Hirliman also admits that on one occasion, he engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim, knowing she was a minor.

The plea is the result of an investigation by the Olean Police Department, under the direction of Chief Ron Richardson, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Erin Keegan, and the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Eric Butler.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 21, 2025, before Judge Vilardo.  

PRIOR FELON PLEADS GUILTY TO NEW CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE

BUFFALO, N.Y. – U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that John Douglas Looney, 82, of Rochester, NY, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa to transportation of obscene material in interstate commerce, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, and a fine of $250,000.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan K. McGuire, who is handling the case, stated that Looney was previously convicted on a federal charge of possession of child pornography. Between August 2018, and March 2019, Looney used an internet connected device and an interactive computer service to receive and distribute images and videos of child pornography via the internet. The images and videos were obscene and depicted prepubescent children being subjected to sexual abuse. Some of the images depicted the sexual abuse of an infant or toddler. In total, Looney possessed more than 1,000,000 images of child pornography on three computers. 

The plea is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Miraglia.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 10, 2025, before Judge Siragusa.
