From the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office,
Deputy Schafer was commended by Sheriff Allard during a brief ceremony March 3, 2025 before the Steuben County Legislature’s Public Safety and Corrections Committee for two recent incidents she handled. First, on February 4th Deputy Schafer responded to the Arkport School District in response to an anonymous tip of violence threatened against staff members. According to Superintendent Harper, Deputy Schafer “responded to the situation with the utmost care, treating it with the seriousness it deserved while providing much-needed reassurance to our staff.”
The second incident on February 6th had Deputy Schafer responding to a domestic incident in which it was reported that an 11-year-old child was out of control. Deputy Schafer’s ability to establish a rapport with the child allowed her to de-escalate the situation and obtain further information from the child that led to a child protective investigation and family court actions. The child’s grandmother was so impressed by Deputy Schafer’s ability to communicate and successfully bond with her granddaughter that she called the Sheriff’s Administrative line and asked that Deputy Schafer be recognized.
“I commend Deputy Schafer for her professionalism, leadership and service. Not only did you display care, empathy and understanding in two dynamic situations, but you problem solved and served the community in an exemplary fashion” Allard stated in his commendation.
