“Young Artist Award Concert” begins at 7:30pm at Hornell High School

Each April, the Hornell Area Wind Ensemble’s concert theme is The Luther R Hoffman & Georgine E Salisbury Young Artist’s Award Concert. The award began in 1991 and has continued each performing year since. The wind ensemble holds an audition in January to select two young musicians from the local area to perform at our Young Artist Concert. Those selected are given the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the ensemble or with piano accompaniment. Each student also receives a certificate of accomplishment and a monetary award.
This Young Artist concert focuses attention on music being an important part in a young person’s life, and throughout, as it is and has been, with the adult performers in the band. The musicians in the band believe that “Music is for Life”.
Initially, the award was in Luther R Hoffman’s name and memory. For years, Luther was a noted band and wind ensemble director at Bath Haverling Central School. Luther also played in and conducted the Hornell Wind Ensemble. With the passing of Georgine E Salisbury in July of 2016, the band amended the name of the award by including Georgine. Georgine’s husband, Ken, played for years with the Wind Ensemble and recently passed away in January of this year. Music was a very important part in Georgine’s life. She believed in ‘playing it forward’ to future generations. Her husband was a very generous donator to the Young Artist Concert since her passing.
This year’s winners, Carter Brown from Savona, and Ryan Hess from Arkport, will be playing their special pieces along with the Hornell Area Wind Ensemble. The Ensemble invites you to come and listen to all the selections including Barnum and Bailey March, Alligator Alley, Concert Rondo, Nostalgia, and more! Mark your calendars – Saturday, April 5th, 7:30 PM at the Hornell High School Auditorium!
