Grant funded updates to Hornell Area Transit

From the City of Hornell,

The City of Hornell is excited to announce that Hornell Area Transit (HAT) has received two new buses. The vehicles are currently being outfitted with communication and radio equipment and will soon be in service.

The buses were secured through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) 5311 Rural Transit Formula Grant, with 90% of the cost covered by federal and state funding. The remaining 10% was funded through New York State’s Accelerated Transit Capital (ATC) Grant, ensuring no additional cost to local taxpayers.

Deputy Mayor Jessica Cleveland expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We are really excited for these new buses to go into service. HAT provides integral transportation services to the City of Hornell and surrounding communities, and is a key part of the transit network throughout Steuben and Allegany Counties. Our buses rack up a lot of miles and experience the same wear and tear as personal vehicles. These new buses will allow us to retire two older vehicles and maintain reliable operations.”

HAT operates dedicated routes several times daily to Almond, Alfred, Bath, and Canisteo, and also offers Dial-A-Ride service within the City of Hornell and parts of the Village of North Hornell and Town of Hornellsville. With 16 buses currently in its fleet, HAT provided over 52,000 rides during the 2024–2025 year.

Transit Supervisor Kim Courtney added, “Our bus service is an affordable transportation option for many. Whether it’s commuting to work, going to the grocery store, attending medical appointments, or connecting college students to the City, our buses offer a dependable alternative to a personal vehicle or a solution for those who don’t have one. All of our buses are ADA-compliant and accessible for individuals with mobility challenges.”

Mayor John Buckley also shared his appreciation, stating, “I am thankful for the grant funding that made these purchases possible. Providing public transportation services in safe, reliable vehicles is essential for the City of Hornell.”

City residents and HAT riders are encouraged to watch for the arrival of buses 61 and 62 on the roadways in the coming days. For route information, schedules, or fares, visit the HAT website at: http://www.hatrides.com or call Hornell Area Transit at 607-324-7910.
