A major police response to Jones Memorial Hospital on Friday September 5 followed an emergency call from hospital staff reporting a man in crisis with a firearm. Despite efforts by multiple police agencies and Allegany County Peer Support, the 54 year old used the weapon to take his own life. Wellsville Chief of Police Timothy O’Grady issued this statement earlier today:

September 5, 2025 – At approximately 7pm, Wellsville Police responded to Jones Memorial Hospital for a report of an individual with a gun in the Emergency Room lobby threatening to harm himself.  Once officers arrived on scene, they made contact with the individual.  After repeated commands from officers to drop the gun, the individual turned the gun on himself and shot one round.  Hospital staff immediately began life saving care.  The individual was identified as Derrick Vinson, age 54 of Wellsville.  He was air lifted to Strong Memorial Hospital and later passed away from his injury.  The Wellsville Police Department was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, and Allegany County Area Peer Support.
