As a proud Democrat, I once again find myself crossing political lines to support Mayor John Buckley for re-election as Mayor of Hornell. In today’s political climate, where division and partisanship so often overshadow progress, it may seem impossible to endorse someone across the aisle. But I believe leaders must be judged on their vision, their results, and their heart — not their party label. That is why I am proud to stand with Mayor Buckley.

When Jay and I started Racalto’s, neither of us had the funds to cover both, the startup costs and the down payment.  Mayor Buckley could have looked the other way — after all, Racalto’s is technically located just outside the city limits. Instead, he privately reached out to folks, reassured them of our creditworthiness, and offered guidance and encouragement at every step.

That is who John is. He doesn’t draw lines to exclude people — he finds ways to lift them up. Today, Racalto’s employs nearly 40 people, and I will never forget the role John played in helping us get off the ground. That kind of leadership is rare: leadership that sees the bigger picture, leadership that puts community first.

John has also led with honor and compassion when it comes to remembering our heroes. His efforts to memorialize Sgt. Daniel Swift, ensuring that his sacrifice will never be forgotten, show the depth of his respect for service and the values we hold dear. It wasn’t politics — it was personal, it was heartfelt, and it was right.

Beyond moments of remembrance, John has delivered results that matter every single day. He has secured millions in state grants that have strengthened our infrastructure and revitalized our neighborhoods. He has kept Hornell’s credit rating strong, taxes low, and quality of life high. These are not abstract talking points — these are results that every Hornell family can see and feel. At a time when many small cities are struggling just to stay afloat, Hornell is moving forward, that is because of John’s steady hand and tireless commitment.

What I said in 2017 is still true today: John is a man of his word. We have disagreed on policy, but never on purpose. We have always shared the same vision of a safer, stronger, more prosperous Hornell. And what sets John apart is his willingness to listen, engage, and to find common ground. He is not the mayor of one party or one neighborhood, he is the mayor for all Hornellians.

On a personal note, John has been more than a leader. He has been a friend. He has embraced my family, my husband, and my life with compassion and respect. That takes character and conviction. And I know he brings that same character and conviction into the Mayor’s Office every single day.

Hornell’s story is still being written. But I believe with all my heart that John Buckley is the right author to write its next chapter. For me, this isn’t about politics; it’s about principle, it’s about people, and it’s about a future where Hornell continues to thrive.

I am humbled to lend my support to Mayor John Buckley. I ask my fellow Hornellians, regardless of party, to look past labels, look at the results, and look at the man. If you do, I believe you’ll see what I see: a leader we can trust, a friend to this community, and the mayor Hornell deserves.

Thank you, John, for helping Racalto’s, for your service, your vision, and your heart for this city.

Respectfully,
Joe Huang-Racalt
