Bath, NY — [October 2025] — Steuben County EMS has received a Physio-Control LifePak 15 cardiac monitor through a grant funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and obtained through the Donald J. Guthrie Foundation.
The purpose of the grant is to assist rural EMS agencies in managing addiction and psychiatric calls more effectively. Monitoring vital signs is a critical component of emergency care for overdose patients who may be at risk of respiratory or cardiac arrest in the field. The new cardiac monitor will serve as an integral tool for Steuben County EMS, enhancing patient care and response capabilities.
The grant also supports ongoing education and training for emergency responders. Sessions have been facilitated in Corning and at Bath Ambulance, as well as in Chemung County at EMSTAR. These include De-escalation Training by Dr. Lisa Patierne, Psychological First Aid training by Dawn Clover from the Guthrie Clinic, and Psych 101 for EMS, helping to prepare first responders for behavioral and mental health emergencies.
The Donald J. Guthrie Foundation, under the leadership of Executive Director Dr. Burt Cagir, has been instrumental in providing support and resources for these regional training efforts. The Foundation’s continued commitment to improving rural healthcare and emergency response directly benefits communities throughout Steuben County and the surrounding region.
Steuben County EMS extends its appreciation to all partners involved in this initiative, including the Donald J. Guthrie Foundation and Dr. Kathleen Hallinan, for their continued dedication to enhancing emergency medical services across the region.
