UPDATED: NY State Police release “No signs of impairment”

Vehicle crashed with six occupants, four survived, two perished

Wellsville ambulance: At approximately 2:25 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2025, Wellsville EMS & Rescue was dispatched to a serious single-vehicle motor vehicle accident in the Town of Wellsville. Upon arrival, emergency crews from Wellsville EMS & Rescue and the Wellsville NY Vol. Fire Department found a single vehicle with heavy damage and multiple occupants trapped inside.

Crews immediately began patient care and extrication efforts. Four patients were transported by Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance and Medical Transport Service, Inc to area hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. Tragically, two individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic incident.

We are grateful for the teamwork and professionalism displayed by Wellsville Fire, Medical Transport Service, and all responding personnel under extremely difficult circumstances. The New York State Police are conducting the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.

No additional details will be released at this time pending completion of their investigation and notification of family members. Wellsville EMS & Rescue extends its sincere appreciation to the Wellsville Fire Department, Medical Transport Service, Inc., and the New York State Police for their strong partnership and coordinated response.

UPDATE From NYS Police:

On November 8, 2025, at 2:24 A.M., Troopers out of SP Amity responded to a single vehicle collision on Tarantine Blvd in the town of Wellsville. Investigation determined that a 2020 Buick Encore was traveling east bound on Tarantine Blvd. The Buick exited the north shoulder of the roadway on a sharp curve striking a utility pole on the driver’s side. The Buick had a total of six teen occupants. The 17-year-old operator, 14-year-old front passenger, 16-year-old and 15-year-old rear passengers had minor injuries. They were transported to Jones Memorial Hospital. Derrick J. Smith, 17 of Canisteo, NY was riding in the tailgate area of the SUV and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Gavin Odell, 18 of Canisteo, NY was sitting behind the operator and was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled for both deceased. No signs of impairment. This is still an active investigation. The NYSP Collision Reconstruction Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted in this investigation.
