The Hornell Red Raiders opened their season at the Wayland-Cohocton Hall of Fame Basketball Showcase taking on the Canisteo-Greenwood Chargers Saturday night.
Canisteo-Greenwood’s senior standout, Carson Chaffee scored 33 points and was the game’s MVP. Griffen Robarge scored 12, while 8th grader Jack Beers hit three 3s and scored 11 points for the Chargers.
The Red Raiders were led by sophomore Ben Woolever, who scored 19 points. Freshman Tyrone Buchanan followed with 11 points for the Raiders.
“I thought for the first time out we played hard,” said Hornell coach Kirk Scholes. “We need to play smarter and do a ton of work against the zone. We started the game the way I wanted. I thought we were executing well, playing tough, and Ben Woolever came out playing well. When they switched to the zone we started to get passive, turn the ball over, and we struggled to get looks.”
Scholes gave the Chargers a lot of credit in the win. “C-G is a well coached team,” commented Scholes. “They have a veteran-laden team that knows their roles. They put in a lot of time and it shows. Carson Chaffee was dominant and played like a kid that’s going to the next level!
“I know we will get better,” continued Scholes. “We need a few guys to step up. Knowing the kids and the character that they have we will learn from this.
“I thought Ben played a nice game, and we will need him to continue to progress. Demayne Dixon and Marco Picco got better as the game went on. We need those guys to be aggressive and to lead the group. They are great leaders and I know who they are as basketball players.” Dixon grabbed 3 rebounds and had 4 steals in the loss. Picco scored 4 points and added 3 steals for the Red Raiders.
Hornell will play their home opener at Alfred University Wednesday night against York.
