Girls’ basketball Game of the Week: Wellsville downs Olean; Lions also face Keshequa, Hornell downs Avon

The Wellsville girls’ basketball team and Hornell were in action this week. Both teams picked up wins.

Wellsville 72, Olean 39

Wellsville had a huge second half to pull away from visiting Olean, 72-39.

The Lions had 10 players score points in the team win.

Addison Hennessy had 17 points including three 3-pointers while Caelyn Stevens scored 16, drailed three 3-pointers and was perfect from the foul line.

Haily Cowburn had a 3-pointer and seven points, Reegan Perkins had five, Ella Green, Alexa Hennessy, Lydia Kaye and Emily Stuck all scored four, Raegan Vogel had six and Jaden Dunbar scored five.

Aliana Hirliman had a game-high 19 points and five 3-pointers for Olean.

Keshequa 62, Wellsville 34

Alicia Ward scored 18 points to pace Keshequa while Bree Benner had 12.

Reegan Perkins drained three 3-pointers and was a perfect 2-for -2 from the line for a team-high 11 points while Raegan Vogel had a three-pointer and seven points, Jaden Dunbat had five, Hailey Cowburn four and Caelyn Stevens one.

“Keshequa is a model program and they have a lot of talent that can beat you different ways, Toney said. “I thought we were always chasing them from the get go and allowed them to kind of dictate the game.”

On Monday, the Lions are at Cuba-Rushford, then play in the Bath tournament on Dec. 26 and 27.

Hornell 60, Avon 31 

Hornell had an impressive win over Avon as Jordyn Dyring had a game-high 19 points with 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal, 1 assist.

Also for Hornell:

Raegan Evingham – 14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks, 1 assist

Teegan Eveland – 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, 2 assists 

Miami Nasca – 9 points, 1 assist 

Selena Maldonado – 8 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds, 2 assists

A’jonay Hawkins – 7 rebounds, 2 points, 2 blocks, 1 assist

Alivia Ryder – 4 rebounds, 1 point

“I don’t think the final score reflects how the game felt for anyone who was in the gym tonight.,” said Hornell coach Jim Dagon. “Avon came to compete and they deserve a ton of credit. Their girls competed hard for all 32 minutes and made us earn everything we got.”

Dagon added, “Tonight wasn’t our best, but that’s early December basketball, some inconsistency is expected. Our focus now is having a great practice tomorrow. That’s it. We want to be better tomorrow than we were today, and that remains our goal regardless of the outcome on the scoreboard.”
