Deputies handle dangerous situation with a knife with skill
From the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office,
On December 12, 2025, Deputies Hurd and Andrews responded to a reported larceny. During the arrest, the suspect resisted and produced a knife, placing Deputy Hurd in immediate danger. Deputy Andrews reacted instantly, securing the weapon and helping safely take the suspect into custody – without injury to deputies or the suspect.

Deputy Andrews’ swift, decisive actions and both Deputies’ professionalism exemplify the value of training and teamwork. Sheriff Allard proudly commends Deputies Andrews and Hurd for their leadership, sound judgment, and exemplary service – actions that potentially saved lives.
This commendation was formally presented by Sheriff Allard at the Steuben County Legislature’s Public Safety and Corrections Committee on Monday, January 5, 2026.
