The Andover-Whitesville boys’ basketball team won three of four and improved to 12-1. The Panthers have a strong hold on the #1 seed in Section V Class D ahead of #2 Jasper-Troupsburg (9-3), Elba (7-3), Mt. Morris (7-5) and Scio-Friendship (7-5).
The team beat HInsdale, 79-49, beat Arkport-Canaseraga 89-45 and lost to 11-1 Cuba-Rushford, 71-60 and beat Addison on Tuesday night, 89-56
“We are also getting more and more contributions for our entire roster as the season progresses,” said Andover-Whitesville coach Jim Joyce. “We are getting closer to where we need to be for the stretch run for sure.”
It was a huge night on Tuesday for Vincent Joyce who had 25 points, 21 rebounds and five assists. Brody Vance once again had 29 points and came away with four steals.
But it was Colton Calladine who stole the show, earning his 1,000th points as he scored 19 points and had seven rebounds.
Also for the Panthers, James Miller-Young had 10 and Gavin Frungillo had seven. The team had contributions from Trey Kent, Rogan Perkins, Carter Grice, Jake Mattison and Peyton Chamberlain.
Gabe Strope paced Addison with 26 Points while Henry Strauss had 12 points.
“It was a great all around effort by the guys tonight,” Coach Joyce said after the Addison win. “We needed that coming off of a sub-par effort Saturday vs Cuba-Rushford. Addison is very athletic and shoot at a high volume. Vincent Joyce dominated on both ends and this was one of Colton Calladine’s best games on the season as well, he was very solid on both ends. Brody Vance did what he does every single game for us — we go as he goes. Contributions from everyone tonight in one form or another. We have a pretty long break between games now so hopefully we get some minor stuff ironed out and get ready for the stretch run.”
Girls basketball
Wellsville 41, Pioneer 32
The Lions downed Pioneer 41-32 to improve to 6-6 and move ahead of Livonia and haverling in the Section V standings.
Junior Hailey Cowburn had 11 points and three rebounds going 3-for-4 from 3-point range while Jaden Dunbar had seven with seven rebounds and two assists. Lydia Kaye Alexa Hennessy and Addison Hennessy all had five points while Caelyn Stevens (three rebounds) had four and Emily Stuck had four and seven rebounds and Raegan Vogel had four rebounds.

“I thought we played a very well rounded game tonight,” said Wellsville coach Drew Toney. “The first half was probably the most complete half of basketball we’ve put together. Hailey Cowburn made the right reads all night and knocked down some shots and then Alexa Hennessy made some big plays when things got tight down the stretch. We had different girls making plays all day. In all our recent wins it has been different girls stepping up at different times and that’s a good sign for us moving forward.
