Chief Murray: Body armor is a critical

The City of Hornell has been awarded $3,019.82 through the Fiscal Year 2025 Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program, administered by the Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance.
The funding will assist the City with the purchase of National Institute of Justice-compliant body armor for members of the Hornell Police Department. The BVP Program helps jurisdictions offset the cost of protective vests, with federal reimbursement generally covering up to 50 percent of eligible purchases.
“This funding helps ensure our officers have access to the protective equipment they need while serving the residents of Hornell,” said Police Chief Ted Murray. “Body armor is a critical piece of officer safety equipment, and we appreciate the continued support provided through this program.”
Mayor John Buckley said the award reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to supporting public safety while pursuing outside funding opportunities.
“Our police officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect this community, and it is important that we provide them with the equipment necessary to do their jobs safely,” Mayor Buckley said. “We are grateful for this federal funding, which helps support officer safety while reducing the burden on local taxpayers.”
