From the Bath NY Rotary Club,
On July 13th members of the Bath Rotary Club volunteered at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier in Elmira. After putting on hairnets and rubber gloves, the members divided into groups of two and began packaging two-pound bags of rice. Those participating in this project included: Bob Cole, Nancy Latour, Tess McKinley, Benita Nesbitt, Mike Slovak, Michelle Smalt, Elaine Tears, Bill White, and Liam Nesbitt, grandson of Benita Nesbitt.
The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is a distribution center that distributes food to various food pantries in Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties. The mission of the food bank is to work together to build and sustain hunger-free communities throughout the Southern Tier. It is committed to create a future without hunger where access to healthy food by all is recognized as fundamental to the well-being and success of individuals and the foundation of a strong, vibrant society.
The Rotarians were also given a tour of other parts of the facility, filled with pallets of boxed food items, by Dylan Roderick, Volunteer Coordinator. Roderick informed the Rotarians about what the food bank does to help fight food insecurity. He noted that food distribution includes to food pantries, meal programs, shelters, after-school programs, senior programs, mobile-food pantries, back packs, and kids’ farmers markets.
Those who participated in this experience thank McKinley for making the arrangements for this project which indeed was most rewarding. The Rotarians encourage other organizations to volunteer also.
