Twin Hickory hosts almost thirty foursomes to benefit Steuben County Sheriff’s Foundation

Confession: I’ll never be a good golfer. I started late in life and commonly warn new playing partners to bring a helmet. But last week I felt good about even my bad shots and lost balls.
I participated in Sheriff Jim Allard’s annual fund-raising golf tournament to benefit the Steuben County Sheriff’s Foundation, a 501 (C3) founded seven years ago to underwrite department training, community benefit goals and department equipment without relying on precious county taxes.
Held at Hornell’s Twin Hickory course, this year’s field brought 29 foursome teams and a generous number of sponsors and volunteers who contributed food and a full day of support for the cause. All proceeds go to Foundation projects. While final scores and “winners” are acknowledged with modest donated prizes, even us hackers can feel good about the day.
The county foundation isn’t directly associated with the larger and more ambitious Sheriff’s Institute which underwrites an annual kid’s camp on Keuka Lake for kids from around the state, ages 9-12, who would otherwise have no vacation fun opportunities. Allard and sheriff department members from around the state are critical to that locally-familiar project as well.
As I wandered through the assembled foursomes before the start of the tournament, it was fun and encouraging to see the enthusiasm from players of all ages and skills. Playing in a “best ball” format allows men, women, young, old and players even less skilled than me to enjoy the team effort for good purpose.
Though this year’s event brought more teams than any previous Foundation tournaments, the net proceeds are modest by comparison with many other charity events but meaningful on the local level. When I was growing up in Bath long ago, golf was still considered an activity for the elite. Expensive and totally unlike the team sports that dominated my time. But as golf welcomed a broader field, I’ve discovered it’s a great chance to spend time with friends and enjoy both the competition and the frustrations. And a day in the sun.
It’s nice to know there are opportunities to feel good even about a game as bad as mine. Thanks to Jim and the Foundation.
