Coach Matt Hill tops his own father-in-law Tom Hagadorn with 336 wins

BATH-The Bath boys Soccer team is off to a 5-1 start to the 2026 season; the one loss is to the defending Class A State Champions East-Aurora from Buffalo. In a 5-0 win over LCAA Rival Dansville Tuesday, September 15, veteran Coach Matt Hill passed his father-in law Tom Hagadorn to become the School’s All-Time wins leader in Boys Soccer with 336 victories. Hagadorn accumulated 335 wins in 20 years, including the New York State Class B State Championship in 1996.
The secret to Hills success has been the kids.
“The kids have to behave and do the right things and do the simple things really well. If that happens, a lot of other things often just fall into place.” Bath Coach Matt Hill said.
What made this one even more special was Hill’s son Callum is an eighth grader on the team and scored a goal and had an assist.
“It’s always been fun to coach all the teams over the years, but it does make it a little more special when your own son is on the team and able to enjoy with you,” Hill said.
Hill has coached the Bath Varsity Boys Soccer team for the last 26 years and is 336-110-47, he has three 20-win seasons in his tenure in 2018,2019 and 2021. Bath has won eleven LCAA league championships under Hill, and ten Sectional Championships. They advanced to the New York State Final Four in 2019 and 2021; they advanced to the New York State Championship game in 2021.
“It certainly does not feel like it has been 26 years. The time has gone by quickly,” Hill said.
Hill was an assistant Coach under Hagadorn on the 1996 State Championship team.
“I had never thought about beating Tom’s record, the thought never crossed my mind,” Hill said.
Hill was honored by the United Soccer Coaches Association in 2018 as the Small School Coach of the year. He has been named Section Five Class B Coach of the year ten times.
As a player at Bath under Hagadorn from 1987-1989 Hill helped Bath to a record of 57-7-3 while winning three League Championships, Two Sectional Championships in 1987 and 1989. In 1987 they advanced to the New York State Championship game. He was named first team All-Conference in 1988 and 1989.
“It was great learning from the best, Mr. Hagadorn who is my father-in-law now but was not my father-in-law at that time,” Hill said.
In 2011 Hill was inducted into the Haverling Athletes Wall of Fame.
Upon graduation from Bath Hill attended CCFL where he continued his Athletic career. Hill played Soccer and Baseball and graduated before the name was changed to FLCC in 1992. During his sophomore year he was named captain of the team. He led the NJCAA Region III in goals and was named first team All-Region. That season Hill also helped lead the baseball team to the College’s first-ever regional championship which resulted in a trip to the NJCAA World Series where the Lakers finished fourth in the country.
Hill transferred to Keuka College and played soccer for two more years. He graduated in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary math education.
He was inducted into the FLCC Hall of fame in 2012.
After 26 years coaching Soccer at Bath, Hill says he definitely has a few more left in him.
“I don’t have a set plan, probably at least four or five more years and then see what happens after that, Hill said
Bath will host Pavilion/York Saturday September 19, at 5:30 p.m., they will host a ceremony to honor the 1996 State Championship team before the game.
