31-year tradition has raised nearly $800,000 for local youth

From Steuben County, Leah Butler and Amy Parmelee dance in Lake Salubria

Two long-time friends from Bath and Hammondsport donned their tutus, fairy dust and crowns and walked into Lake Salubria Friday, raising some $18, 069 to date for youth programs and organizations.

The blow-y, damp sprinkle at Lake Salubria didn’t deter Amy Parmelee and Leah Butler from braving the elements to take a couple unexpected dips and dance a few steps on their way out to warm blankets and smiling friends.

Since it was launched in 1992 after an on-air joke by WVIN-FM radio personality David Taylor Smith, the event is nearing the $800,000-mark in its 31-year history and supports dozens of area youth organizations.

Officials expect the amount raised by Butler and Parmelee to be significantly higher when the final tally is counted.
