Community is key this summer at the Hornell Public Library. The library’s staff members have planned an exciting 2023 Summer Reading Program that follows the theme of “All Together Now” which officially began July 5th and will run through August 24th.  The library kicked off its Summer Reading Program at the Hornell Community Arts Center this past Wednesday with an exciting performance by the beloved Bubble Man!

The Bubble Man, Doug Rougeux, worked his magic for children of all ages. The Community Arts Center was packed full of families who were able to enjoy the fun bubble mania performance with a total attendance of around 263 people! Kids were able to play with bubbles by creating their own homemade bubble wands. Children were also asked to share what they love about their community in honor of the theme “All Together Now” on a whiteboard display. Some sweet responses included “parents”, “the pool”, “the flowers” and “bubbles.”

The library’s director and staff are so thrilled and appreciative to have had such a tremendous turnout for the summer program’s first event. The director, Denise Chilson, encourages the community to get involved in the program this summer: “It is fantastic to see so many people participating and having fun! We want to keep community involvement and reading consistently throughout the summer at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Students, teachers, parents, and caregivers work hard throughout the school year to learn and expand their skills. Participating in the Summer Reading Program is a great way to retain those skills and prevent summer slide. So, keep reading, track your daily reading, and turn in your minutes each week for a prize!”

With many more exciting events in store and a rewarding summer reading challenge for all ages, there is so much to do at your local library this summer! Some featured events for next week include a story hour with Snitch the K9 of the Hornell Police Department on Tuesday, July 11th at 1:00 PM; the Wildlife Rockstars at the New Hope Community Center on Thursday, July 13th at 1:30 PM; and a DEC Fishing story hour on Saturday, July 15th at 10:00 AM. Visit the library’s website or Facebook page to learn more about upcoming events and the summer reading challenge.

The library’s open hours are Monday and Tuesday 12:00 PM-7:00 PM, Wednesday 9:00 AM-7:00 PM, Thursday 12:00 PM-7:00 PM, Fridays 1:00 PM-5:00 PM, and Saturdays 10:00 AM-2:00 PM.  If you have any questions, please contact the Hornell Public Library at (607) 324-1210 or via e-mail at hornellpubliclibrary@gmail.com.
