Dansville 52, Canisteo-Greenwood 20

CANISTEO — A 20-point opening eight minutes of play helped make a ton of noise for the Lady Mustangs of Dansville, as six different scorers all recorded at least a bucket in the midst of their game-starting introduction against host Canisteo-Greenwood, using it to jet-fuel their 52-20 triumph over the Lady Chargers on Tuesday in the Canisteo Valley.

The Lady Mustangs buckled down on both ends of the floor for much of the battle that ensued against Canisteo-Greenwood (1-1), posting a humongous 20-6 first quarter run that set the bar on offense, while the defense pinned the Lady Chargers against their pressure, limiting them to just a trio of shots from the field.

Among the leading letterwinners to carve the path towards victory for Dansville was Kali Meyer, who led an all-balanced Lady Mustangs attack with a game-high 13 points.

For the Lady Chargers, Bailey Mullen recorded 11 team-high points, pairing them with six rebounds and four steals. On special teams, Harlie McCaffery provided a presence off the backboard, grabbing six rebounds.

Canisteo-Greenwood will look to bounce back on Thursday with a 6 p.m. visit from Alfred-Almond.

Jasper-Troupsburg 38, Genesee Valley/Belfast 30

BELFAST — Genesee Valley/Belfast was challenged straight out of the gate by the Lady Wildcats of Jasper-Troupsburg, as they found themselves in an early hole to climb out of. Under the guidance of Mary Hamer, and some key third quarter defense, they were able to do just that by creating a brand new ball game come the fourth quarter.

In that last eight minute timeframe, Genesee Valley/Belfast was able to trim their deficit down to as little as a single possession. But the Lady Wildcats had other plans, as Reagan Miles scored six of her 10 points in a big way to ensure that Jasper-Troupsburg remained out front the entire way, as they left Belfast victorious with a 38-30 edging.

http://www.nylandquest.comThe NY Landquest team are big fans!!!

“I was really proud of our defensive effort that we displayed,” said GV/Belfast coach Raegan Ryan. “I was proud of their grit tonight too. We were down seven at the half, and then we came out and won the third quarter to jump back in it. We got it to two in the fourth, but we didn’t have enough left to put it over the top. It was a great test for us, and we will get better from this.”

The Lady Wildcats put the pedal to the metal across the first eight minutes with five different scorers all breaking through to provide a spark, while on defense, they held Genesee Valley/Belfast (2-1) to just a pair of baskets from the field — one each from Abby Sullivan and Mary Hamer, as they capitalized on both fronts to create a 13-4 lead going into the second quarter.

The hosts in white were able to trim down the deficit however with Hamer and Sullivan springing the offense back to life once more in the team’s 12-point stanza, as Hamer went straight to the hole for a pair of baskets before knocking one down outside alongside Sullivan to put the pressure on Jasper-Troupsburg heading into the second half.

That pressure build up would reach a boiling point in the midst of a defensive third quarter, when Genesee Valley/Belfast looked to Jenna Hill and Ava Aaronson to win the frame, as the two scorers combined for all nine points to outscore Jasper-Troupsburg with a 9-5 run to trim their seven-point halftime deficit down to three.

Something had to give, come time for the fourth quarter of play.

With Genesee Valley/Belfast hot on the trail of the Lady Wildcats, the visitors in black witnessed Reagan Miles rise to the occasion in the biggest of ways, as she scored six humongous points to help set up shop for what was a 10-5 doubling-up of their opposition, permitting them to keep their lead fully intact to record the big road win.

Hamer led all scorers for Genesee Valley/Belfast with 13 points. Hill followed behind with six points, while Sullivan concluded with five.

On Friday, Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to bounce back into the win column with a 7:30 p.m. visit from Perry back inside the Jungle in Belmont.

WRESTLING

Wellsville 57, Fillmore/Keshequa 15

FILLMORE — Out of the 10 total victories that they were able to garner on the mat, Paul Giovanniello started the night red hot for the Wellsville Lions to open the new campaign over the road against Fillmore/Keshequa, scoring the team’s quickest pin in the first match at 108 pounds to help set up shop for what formulated into a 57-15 victory in Fillmore.

At 108 pounds, Giovanniello assisted in starting the match for Wellsville with the first of three straight victories, as he worked his way towards a rapid pinfall victory of Fillmore/Keshequa’s Jules Cotton. After a Jensen Spicer forfeit win at 116 pounds, David Clark capped off a 15-0 start for the Lions with a close 6-3 decision over Alivia Cartwright.

A short time later, Fillmore/Keshequa got on the board with back-to-back victories from Ryan Vedder (131 pounds) and Graham Howe (138 pounds), with Vedder scoring a big 10-4 decision over Wellsville’s Adam Iantorno, while Howe posted the quickest pinfall win of the evening by rolling up Mason Edwards in just 38 seconds to collect the win.

From that point forward, the Lions would propel forward and bolster their advantage over Fillmore/Keshequa with seven straight victories — four of them via forfeit, as Landon Stratton (152 pounds), Matt Ritter (160 pounds), Jonah McCartney (172 pounds) and Gabe Black (215 pounds) all recorded victories.

Jack Cicirello (145 pounds), Xander Outman (190 pounds) and Brayden Taggert (285 pounds) all scored pinfall wins deep in the second period of their respective matches to cement Wellsville’s win for good. For Fillmore/Keshequa, the match would end on a positive note at 101 pounds, as Connor McCumiskey picked up a pinfall win of his own over Easton Joyce.

“I felt we battled hard in the contested matches. Wellsville is just a year or two ahead of where we are as a program, in terms of experience. They have some tough kids that wrestled well,” said Fillmore/Keshequa coach Jarrett Vosburg. “Ryan Vedder, Graham Howe and Connor McCumiskey picked up our wins on the night, with Ryan winning by decision and Connor and Graham picking up wins. Overall, it’s a good start for our dual meet schedule before we head to Arkport this weekend.”

Both teams will return to the mat next week, as Wellsville heads back home to host Arkport/Canaseraga in their home opener at 6 p.m. next Tuesday, while Fillmore/Keshequa travels to visit Campbell-Savona next Wednesday at 6 p.m.

BOYS SWIMMING

Wellsville 92, Campbell-Savona 84

CAMPBELL — Times were recorded and points were traded left and right amongst Wellsville and Campbell-Savona on Tuesday in a meet where the final result remained ever so high up in the air all throughout the night.

But after a rapid start allowed them to grab the first-hand advantage on the host Panthers out of the gate, the Lions of Wellsville would wind up using nine first place finishes to counterattack Campbell-Savona’s multiple secondary finishes in the water to proclaim victory for the second time on the young season, as they exited town with a narrow 92-84 decision.

“The boys pulled off a close one. Going up against a team with double our numbers was really tough,” said Lions coach Steve Hand. “Again, it was a complete team effort to get the win tonight. The team is swimming a lot of yards early on, and we’re still posting some fast times. Ben (Jordan) looked strong in his races, Eli (Brophy) and Thomas (Cooke) are still finding their pace, but going fast while doing it. It’s great to see the Sectional cuts continue to keep coming in.”

Three different Lions (2-0) swimmers all recorded a pair of first place finishes to pave the lane towards success, with Ben Jordan leading the swimming pride with his victories in the 50 freestyle (24.44) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.82). Ethan Crandell chipped in with top finishes of his own right in the 200 freestyle (2:12.61) and 100 freestyle (57.92), while Eli Brophy placed first in the 200 individual medley (2:32.45) and 100 butterfly (1:07.87).

The Lions would gather one more individual win from Tyler Rahr off the Diving board, as he compiled 172.05 points for the win. Wellsville also garnered two relay victories out of the three relay events, collecting gold in the 200 medley (1:59.06) to start the meet against the Panthers, and later on, a first place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.05) in the second half.

On Friday, Wellsville is back home to welcome in the Addison Knights in a 5:30 p.m. first swim.

CANASERAGA — A momentous and enormous surge of horsepower airmailed the Lady Eagles of Fillmore straight over top of Section V powerhouse Pavilion to open their campaign on the hardwood over the weekend. With the ball of energy now firmly within their possession, their aim was to keep the wheels churning along into the brand new week on Monday with their first road trip of the season.

Up next on the docket was Arkport/Canaseraga, and like their Saturday afternoon battle with the Lady Golden Gophers back home, the Lady Eagles once again used a first quarter detonation to set the tempo against the Lady Wolves, holding them to just two points while building an advantage that saw them remain in the driver’s seat for good, never unbuckling in what was a 65-32 road win.

“The girls came out with a lot of energy and set the tone right away tonight. We were able to play fast and because of it, we got a lot of contributions up and down the lineup.” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks.

Four different Lady Eagles (2-0) all eclipsed the 10-point plateau on the stat sheet, including another team-leading performance from Hope Russell, who tallied 19 game-high points. Following behind was Emalyn Mucher and her outside game, nailing a trio of triples from downtown to put towards her 13 points. Preslee Miller and Grace Russell helped round off a high-octane offense with 11 and 10 points, respectively for the visitors.

Fillmore never looked back from their rapid start against Arkport/Canaseraga across the first eight minutes of play, as the defense clamped down their end of their hardwood and held the hosts to just a single basket’s worth of points in the midst of their 17-2 run that allowed them to set the table for the remainder of the game ahead.

On special teams, Mattie McCumiskey led the game off the glass with 11 big rebounds, finishing just two points shy of a double-double for the Lady Eagles. Adding more help along the way was Grace Russell, who recorded seven steals and six assists. Rachel Hatch handed out five more helpers.

Next up for Fillmore is a 7:30 p.m. trip back home on Thursday, as they welcome the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg into The Rock.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Houghton Academy 47, Keshequa 44

NUNDA — Both Houghton Academy and Keshequa went back-and-forth all throughout the night on Monday, exchanging trips up and down the hardwood. They would remain a stone’s throw from one another until the visiting Panthers created an opening in the second half to build a lead that nearly eclipsed double figures.

But the hosts in white and orange closed the gap once again to make it a one-possession game all the way down the stretch. Something had to give in the contest’s waning minutes, and for the Panthers, two big shots at the free throw line allowed them to branch their lead insurmountably enough to hang on and claim a narrow 47-44 win.

The biggest lead one team would possess was eight points, held by Houghton Academy (2-0) after halftime. In the midst of a flurry of back-and-forth baskets all throughout the contest, the Panthers would turn their attention to some big shots at the line from James Adenuga to go with a long triple from Josh Davidson in the last minute of the third quarter.

Both teams would remain step for step with one another, but Keshequa would never take the lead away from the Panthers, as they used three huge shots at the charity stripe to go with a Davidson two-pointer inside to assist in locking up the win while facing immense pressure from the hosts across the second half.

Leading the way was Adenuga, who had a team-high 17 points. Jack Prentice was not far behind, collecting 16 points and eight rebounds. Davidson finished with eight points, while Marco Zanini had six to go with eight rebounds.

Houghton Academy is back home on Wednesday for their home opener against incoming Fillmore at 7:30 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL

Arkport/Canaseraga 3, Fillmore 1

FILLMORE —After falling in a back-and-forth first set to open the action in Fillmore, the visiting Wolves of Arkport/Canaseraga bounced back in a big way to capture the next three sets directly in a row. One of them included a third-set marathon that saw an extension into extra serves, as the Wolves declared triumph in four sets at the end of the night, winning 23-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-14.

The Eagles (0-2) were led by Reid Cockle at the service line, as he gathered 17 service points to go with three aces. Following up was Nathan Tanner, who chipped in with 10 service points and one more ace, while setter Anderson Wiltsey handed out 26 big helpers to set up the offense for success.

Warsaw Tournament Championship

Byron-Bergen 80, Fillmore 66

WARSAW — After edging out host Warsaw to earn their spot in their home tournament, the Eagles of Fillmore were in for a bigger challenge against powerhouse Byron-Bergen for the championship. The kind of challenge that can make you even better, especially when the second season approaches in February.

The Eagles were able to answer that call against a Bees offense that saw a massive eruption caused by an incredible performance from Braedyn Chambry down low. In turn, Fillmore provided a blistering response of their own — Jonah Bialek.

In the first quarter of play, Bialek was scorching hot from every angle, as he posted 19 of his team-leading 30 points within the frame — 15 of them from downtown off five triples to keep pace with a Bees offense that saw Chambry take command. The two teams continued to wheel and deal until the team in maroon claimed a one-point advantage at the break.

With the upper hand, a chance for Byron-Bergen to break away presented itself. Enter Brody Baubie.

Inside the team’s 25-point third quarter, the wildfire had spread to the outside with Baubie now serving as the team’s three-point arsonist, hitting four big triples while Chambry continued to take care of business inside. Because of it, the Bees were able to garner enough room to wiggle free and towards the Warsaw crown with an 80-66 win over the Eagles to close out the weekend.

“We had a heck of a first half, and Jonah put on an incredible shooting exhibition in the first,” Eagles coach Randy Crouch said. “We made the mistake of falling in love with the three, and stopped working to create quality shots. We need to be a team that has eight to 10 guys scoring and we got away from that tonight. We also didn’t have an answer for Chambry, and when we did adjust, Baubie hit some big shots. It’s not the outcome we wanted, but we will learn and get better. We have some big games next week, and we will need improvement to be successful.”

It was a fine first half for the Eagles (1-1), keeping pace with Byron-Bergen behind Bialek’s massive first quarter to garner the early 23-20 lead. The tide was slightly turned in the favor of the Bees in the second quarter, as they captured a halftime lead behind 11 more points from the hand of Chambry — eight of them from the field, as he finished with 20 first half points.

Down by one, Fillmore was able to find a way to limit the Byron-Bergen senior inside, but the Bees opened the floor up for Brody Baubie to take control of the spotlight outside, as his three-point came blossomed to life in the third quarter to propel the team’s 25-point stanza behind an array of three-pointers.

In all, a 25-16 outscoring of the Eagles was collected at the end of it, as the lead stood at 10 heading into the fourth.

In the last eight minute session, the Bees were able to finish the job behind Chambry’s curtain call, as he put the finishing touches on a 41-point performance with a humongous 12-point frame, keeping that one giant footprint in front of Fillmore until the very end to lock up the tournament’s crown.

Finishing behind Bialek and his 30 points for the Eagles was Zach Sisson, who pitched in 19 points. Campbell Mucher had seven points to add in.

Coming up on Wednesday, Fillmore will look to regroup back on the road with a 7:30 p.m. visit in store at Houghton Academy.
