From the Office of Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer,

Senator Chuck Schumer announced that President Biden has officially signed the HEARTS Act into law, a landmark bill designed to enhance emergency preparedness in schools across the nation. The legislation aims to increase the availability of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and expand CPR training programs for students and staff.

“I’m honored to have fought for this life-saving legislation alongside the Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin,” Senator Schumer said in a statement. Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a game in January 2023, has been a vocal advocate for improving access to life-saving equipment and training in schools.

The HEARTS Act, which garnered bipartisan support, is expected to make a significant impact by equipping schools with vital tools to respond to cardiac emergencies effectively. Schumer praised the legislation as a step toward safeguarding the lives of young Americans.

Advocates and health professionals have celebrated the HEARTS Act as a crucial measure in empowering communities to act quickly in life-threatening situations. The law’s implementation will begin in the coming months, with funding allocated to ensure widespread access to AEDs and CPR training.
