In a quiet living room in Hornell, a young man, and a senior citizen, sit together, laughing over a black-and-white classic from the Golden Age of Hollywood. For one of them, this simple visit isn’t just entertainment—it’s a lifeline.

“She told our volunteer that she loved those old movies,” says Edna Kay, coordinator at Faith in Action STNY. “The volunteer started bringing her favorites to watch together. It wasn’t just about passing time—it made her feel special and cared for.”

That is the heart of Faith in Action: small acts of kindness that make an enormous difference for seniors who want one thing most of all—to remain in their own homes, living life on their own terms.

Faith in Action STNY (Southern Tier New York) is a nonprofit coalition of congregations, civic groups, and caring individuals dedicated to helping older adults age in place. Its mission is simple but profound: keep seniors living safely and independently, while preserving dignity and human connection.

This help is provided free of charge, thanks to the generosity of volunteers who give their time and their hearts. The organization serves Steuben County and has recently expanded into Chemung County to meet growing needs.

While Faith in Action provides practical help—transportation to medical appointments, prescription pick-ups, grocery shopping, light housekeeping, yard work, and even minor home repairs—the real magic often happens in moments of companionship.

“Our volunteers do not judge. They accept people as they are,” Edna explains. “It’s about building trust, listening, and showing someone that they’re not alone.”

These visits often become the highlight of a senior’s week. For many, the difference between loneliness and connection can come down to a friendly face at the door.

Faith in Action volunteers use their own vehicles and complete orientation and background checks. “Safety and trust are top priorities,” Edna says. Volunteers can choose the services they feel most comfortable offering, whether that’s driving someone to a doctor’s appointment, doing light yard work, or simply sharing a cup of coffee and a conversation.

Founded in 1995 as the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Program, Faith in Action began with just 60 seniors served in Hornell. Today, it has reached over 1,000 people and continues to grow. With the recent expansion into Chemung County, the demand for services—and volunteers—has never been higher.

“This program thrives because of community,” says Edna. “Every hour a volunteer gives means another senior can stay in their home longer, feel valued, and maintain independence.”

Isolation among older adults is a growing issue nationwide. According to studies, loneliness can impact health as severely as chronic illness. Programs like Faith in Action provide not just help, but hope.

“When someone takes time to listen to your stories or remembers your favorite old movie, it reminds you that you matter,” Edna says. “That kind of care can’t be measured in dollars.”

Faith in Action is calling on the community for volunteers in Steuben and Chemung Counties. You don’t need special skills—just compassion and a willingness to give a little of your time.
