Mayor Buckley, Mrs. Buckley, Larry “The Bikeman” Pelkey, join in the fun ride around the Maple City

From the Hornell Public Library,

Hornell, NY — On Tuesday, August 6th, the Hornell Public Library hosted its fourth annual Community Bike Ride, a growing tradition that brings together families, local leaders, and law enforcement for an evening of fun, fitness, and community connection.

Organized in collaboration with the Hornell Police Department, the ride emphasizes bicycle safety—especially for kids. Captain Mike Sexsmith, a long-time member of the department and a passionate advocate for bicycle safety, once again played a key role in the event. Before the ride began, Captain Sexsmith gave his traditional refresher course on hand signals and riding safety, making sure all participants—from first-timers to seasoned riders—were ready for the road.

The ride typically travels from the Hornell Public Library to Shawmut Park, one of the city’s beautiful public parks. Upon arrival, participants were treated to ice-cold water provided by library staff to help them rehydrate before the return trip. The route offers not just a scenic ride, but also a shared experience that strengthens community bonds.

This year’s ride was especially memorable thanks to several notable attendees. Mayor John Buckley and his wife joined the group—Mayor Buckley, a lifelong bicycle enthusiast and a strong supporter of community events, was warmly welcomed by fellow riders. Also participating was local legend Larry Pelkey, well-known for his efforts to find, fix, and donate bicycles to anyone in need throughout Hornell and the surrounding area. Accompanied by four of his biking-savvy grandchildren, Pelkey brought extra energy and inspiration to the event. To date, he has repaired and gifted over 1,300 bicycles.

The ride drew a diverse group of participants, including individuals who have taken part in all four rides, as well as newcomers and families recently returned to Hornell. For many, it was a way to meet new people and enjoy some summer fun.

Hornell Public Library Director Denise Chilson, alongside Captain Sexsmith, has big plans for future events. Both are committed to offering healthy, engaging programs that bring people together. Their goal for next year? To double the number of participants.

“We love seeing people laugh, share stories, and make new connections,” said Chilson. “This is what community looks like.”

The Hornell Police Department continues to support the ride by providing officer escorts—including Captain Sexsmith himself—as well as a patrol vehicle to ensure safe passage through busy intersections.

The Hornell Public Library encourages new riders and returning participants to join in next year. For more information about upcoming Community Bike Rides or other events, contact the library at 607-324-1210, visit their Facebook page, or go to hornellpubliclibrary.com.
