A recent fire at the Steuben County Landfill could have been much worse

From Steuben County

The Steuben County Department of Public Works is reminding residents that chemicals, batteries, and other hazardous materials should never be disposed of in landfills or transfer stations. These items must be recycled or disposed of properly at designated facilities to protect public safety, the environment, and county infrastructure.

Improper disposal of batteries and chemicals can cause dangerous and costly incidents. Recently, a truck at the Steuben County Landfill caught fire due to improperly discarded materials. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, but the situation could have been much worse.

“These types of fires are preventable,” said Eric Rose, Commissioner of Public Works. “When residents recycle hazardous items properly, they help protect our workers, the public, and the environment.”

Residents are urged to take the following steps:

Batteries (including rechargeable, lithium-ion, and car batteries) should be dropped off at approved recycling locations.

Chemicals, paints, and other hazardous household products should be disposed of during designated hazardous waste collection events or through authorized facilities.

Never mix hazardous items with regular trash or recycling.
