Law enforcement officials are warning Steuben County residents to be on alert for two separate scams currently circulating in the area.
According to New York State Police, one scheme involves con artists approaching people at ATM machines. Scammers reportedly claim they are unable to withdraw their own cash and ask the victim to complete a withdrawal on their behalf. Once the transaction is complete, the scammer takes the money and leaves, leaving the helpful victim short-changed.
Meanwhile, Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard is alerting residents about another scam in the Corning area involving fraudulent text messages that appear to come from local banks. The messages urge recipients to click on a link to update or verify account information.
“Allard emphasizes that legitimate financial institutions will never ask customers to share personal or account information through text or phone calls,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “If you receive a suspicious message, contact your bank directly using a verified phone number.”
Officials urge residents to stay cautious, avoid clicking on unfamiliar links, and report suspected scams to local law enforcement.
