The Hornell Red Raiders dropped to 4-2 after their road loss to the Wellsville Lions Monday evening.

The Red Raiders were leading 16-9 at the end of the first quarter, but in typical Hornell – Wellsville fashion, the teams were tied at 28 apiece going into halftime.

“We started the game really well,” commented Hornell coach, Kirk Scholes. “I thought we came out attacking on both ends.  But, as the game went on Wellsville became the aggressor and we got put on our heels.”

The Lions came out strong in the second half and capitalized on key Red Raider turnovers.  “As the game went on I felt like we had some guys play tight, but we struggled to knock down shots and started having careless turnovers.”

Ben Woolever led all scorers with 24 points for the Red Raiders.  He also had 3 steals on the night.  “Ben played a tremendous game,” Scholes said of the sophomore.  “I really liked how he attacked the close out.  He put it on the floor really well and made the right play.  He just needs to stay aggressive!”  Freshman, Tyrone Buchanan scored 13 points in the losing effort and added 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

“I feel like I made a mistake coming out of our zone.  Wellsville did a good job running their stuff and staying in it until they got the ball where they wanted.  We got killed inside all night and they hit some big shots from their role players.”  Wellsville’s Trenton Green had a big night, scoring 23 points. Blake Kalkhof scored 16, and Cole Densmore scored 13 for the Lions.

Scholes continued, “Tonight was really our first test on the road in a loud environment.  We didn’t handle some of that well.  Hoping tonight will be a good learning experience for us.  We need to be more vocal on the court.  I’m going to try like crazy to get them to talk more.  I’m begging for it to come out.  We will go back to practice, continue to work and hope we can play better at Marcus Whitman on Tuesday.”
