Brrr. Winter has been colder than our experience the last few years, back to the “old days,” of sustained sub-freezing temperatures. As the 49th anniversary of the great Blizzard of 1977 approaches, weather reporters across Western New York are warning of some severe cold headed this way.

Thursday January 22 will start out downright balmy compared to what 48 hours will bring. From the mid-day high of 20F, temperatures will drop hourly until bottoming out late Friday at -10F.

That thirty degree swing will start with high winds Friday morning and rapid temperature drops throughout the day. By 7pm, actual temperatures will be at about 0F with an AccuWeather RealFeel of -24F. By 12AM Saturday, temperatures will be near the -10F mark for a very cold overnight.

The morning of Saturday January 24 will remain very cold but winds will die down as the cold air moves settles over the region. Expect a very chilly week ahead with plenty of subzero weather through the end of January.

Allegany County has established a long list of warming centers for those without proper housing or with heat or water issues due to the cold.
