From Staff Reports,

Crews responded in the dark of night to a fully involved fire in the village of Hammondsport. Sadly the structure was the village owned Public Works building, luckily no injury or loss of life has been reported. As you can see from the photos below, this was a total loss:

Fire Department officials thanked area volunteers for the mutual aid:

Structure fire at Hammondsport DPW. Thank you to Wayne, Pulteney, Bath , Prattsburg, Town of Urbana, Steuben Sherriff Dept, NYSP, SC 156 and ALS 150 for your assistance

The Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce made this statement in the wake of the disaster:

“Today we want to take a moment to recognize the true heroes of our community — our volunteer firefighters and first responders.

While most of us are home with our families, at work, or asleep in our beds, you are ready at a moment’s notice to answer the call. You show up on our hardest days — during emergencies, accidents, storms, and unknowns — with courage, compassion, and steady hands.

You give your time, your energy, and often your own comfort to keep Hammondsport safe. And you do it not for recognition, but because you care deeply about this community and the people in it. That kind of selflessness is extraordinary.

From all of us, thank you for the sacrifices you make, the hours you volunteer, and the lives you protect every single day. We are so grateful for you. ❤️

If you see a firefighter or first responder around town, take a moment to say thank you — they truly deserve it. #CommunityStrong#ThankYouFirstResponders
