Wayland-Cohocton – 80 Hornell – 65
Way-Co’s Alex Fedorchuk was unstoppable tonight and led the Eagles with 43 of the team’s 80 points, including 7 3-pointers, in their 80-65 win over the Hornell Red Raiders. Cole Hanggi added 14 for the Eagles.
The game was neck-and-neck through the first half with both teams ending the first quarter at 21 points and Way-Co up 37-34 going into halftime. Fedorchuk scored 21 of his points in the first half. The Eagles pulled away in the third quarter, with Fedorchuk scoring 11 of the team’s 19 points to increase their lead to 13 going into the 4th quarter. The Red Raiders put forth a solid effort in the 4th quarter, scoring 22 points, but Fedorchuk and the Eagles continued their strong offensive showing for the win.
Hornell was led by Demayne Dixon who scored 30 points including going 12-16 at the free throw line. He added 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Ben Woolever added 18 points & 4 rebounds. Tyrone Buchanan played tough all night and earned himself a double-double with 12 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists for the Red Raiders.
Coach Scholes reflected, “We ran into a hungry team tonight that made us pay for every mistake. We struggled to get stops consistently. We had a bad 3rd quarter offensively and that was the difference in the game.
“We did play well at times and a few kids played really well. We just aren’t getting consistent contributions across the board from everyone each night. We need everybody to do their part and play their role. We need to get stops as a unit, and tonight we didn’t get enough of them.
“Demayne was aggressive all night and had a career high 30 points. I thought Tyrone was all over the court tonight. For a freshman to go get 15 rebounds as a guard is pretty special. Ben played well offensively and hit some big shots.”
The Red Raiders move to 10-7 on the season and are currently seeded #2 in Class B action. With just a handful of games left in the regular season, coach Scholes commented, “As I said to the kids tonight, this bracket is wide open. I think a bunch of teams could make a run. It will be determined by the team that executes at both ends of the court and which players step up.” LeRoy is seeded #1, and Waterloo and Wayland-Cohocton round out the top 4 teams.
