From BIANYS and NYSATA,

The Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS) and the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association (NYSATA) will host a Concussion Outreach Prevention Education (COPE) seminar on Monday, March 2 at 6:30pm.

Featured on the panel is Dr. Zahi Kassas, a pediatrician that has serviced Allegany County for decades. He has also served as a school physician for a number of schools in the district.

Dani Nelson knows the dangers of a concussion well. During softball spring training in 2025, she dove to try and catch a foul ball. She smacked her chin hard on the ground and immediately had a headache, dizziness, and neck pain. She struggled in the classroom due to difficulty with her memory, focus, sensitivity to light and sound, and having a constant headache. As hard as she tried, she couldn’t focus throughout a lecture and could only do work for a short time. She also struggled with forgetting what she had to do during the day, or even what she did during the day.

COPE provides valuable information for educators, nurses, coaches, athletic trainers, students, and parents/guardians on how to create a plan for a successful return of a concussed student back to youth and higher education sports and the classroom as well as many ways to prevent concussions.
