Canisteo river thaw, colorful feathered friends, migration begins

From Janie Ferguson,

It is currently 19* and sunny  here in Cameron Mills, NY at 7:40 am

I begin this week with a vibrant male cardinal, who is known for his aggressive behaviour to protect his territory, and a steady NS train greeting us as it passes through our valley, along with signs that we had an ice jam on the banks of the Canisteo River, as well.

Next a noisy blue jay in the snow, They are so smart that they can mimic a hawk, and warn other birds to flee, before they become lunch, and several common merganser ducks, enjoying a swim with the anchored ice in view.

They are one of the first signs of spring and the breaking of winter! Yeah!! I’m ending with a little black-capped chickadee searching for a sunflower seed, and Canada geese floating along as the sun is setting. They are another sign of spring, and they migrate northward.

I believe we are all ready for spring! So, let’s hope the migrating birds showing up here in Steuben County this week, is a true sign that it’s not too far away!

Enjoy your weekend, Janie
