Facility boss Billy Jefferds leads in-depth walk-through

From Steuben County

Today, newly incoming legislators joined experienced members of the Steuben County Legislature, alongside county officials and department directors, for an in-depth tour of the Steuben County Landfill. The comprehensive visit offered a firsthand look at the critical operations that support residents across Steuben County.

The tour provided a full overview of the landfill’s operations. Attendees were able to see the full process and better understand how the system functions safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental regulations.

Leading the tour was Billy Jefferds, Steuben County Assistant Commissioner of the landfill under the Steuben County Department of Public Works. Under the direction of Commissioner Eric Rose, Jefferds is charged with managing landfill operations and ensuring the facility runs effectively for the benefit of county residents.

Jefferds provided detailed explanations of daily operations, long-term planning, environmental safeguards, and the engineering behind the landfill’s newest cell expansion. His team was on-site to offer insight at every stage of the tour, demonstrating both technical expertise and a strong commitment to public service.

Commissioner Rose shared the following statement:

“I couldn’t be prouder of Billy and his team. Even though I was unable to attend today’s tour, I had full confidence that Billy would step up and lead his crew with professionalism and expertise. The landfill is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in Steuben County, and it’s critical that our lawmakers understand the complexity and responsibility involved in operating it. Billy and his team did an outstanding job providing transparency, education, and insight to our County legislators and officials.”

The Steuben County Landfill plays a vital role in protecting public health and the environment while supporting economic activity throughout the county. Opportunities like today’s tour help ensure that both new and veteran lawmakers have a clear understanding of the systems in place that serve the residents of Steuben County every day.
