Students listen as Assemblywoman Andrea Bailey reads “Seasons on the Farm”
Prattsburgh, NY – Last week, March 16-20, students across New York State celebrated Agricultural Literacy Week. In Steuben County, the Agriculture in the Classroom program visited elementary school students to read this year’s book, Seasons on the Farm written by Chelsea Tornetto and illustrated by Karen Bunting. The reading was followed by a hands-on activity where students were asked to draw what each season might look like on a farm.
Seasons on the Farm demonstrates the different jobs to do and events that happen on a family farm during spring, summer, fall, and winter. The book mirrors agriculture in New York State where we have four distinct seasons, each bringing something different to life on a farm. Students in Steuben County were able to relate to the book either from their own experience with their family’s farm, from driving past fields on their way to school, or from what they have learned about farms through the Agriculture in the Classroom program.

This past Friday, March 20, the Prattsburgh Central School second-grade class was visited by a special volunteer. New York State Assemblywoman Andrea Bailey joined the Steuben County Agriculture in the Classroom program to read Seasons on the Farm. While reading the book, Assemblywoman Bailey also shared stories from her own experience living on a farm. After the book, Assemblywoman Bailey and Agriculture in the Classroom Educator Stephanie McKinley facilitated a discussion about what changes students notice on local farms during the four seasons. Elementary students in Steuben County will continue to learn about seasonal changes on farms throughout the month of March with the Agriculture in the Classroom program. As part of Agricultural Literacy Week, a copy of Seasons on the Farm will be donated to each elementary school and community library in Steuben County thanks to the support of generous community members and Steuben County Agriculture in the Classroom.
