Sheriff Allard, Officer Audinwood, Sgt. Sciotti on parade
From Sheriff James Allard,
It’s a beautiful day in Steuben County.
Happy belated Independence Day and 250th Birthday to our great country! Here at the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, although we are only 230 years old, we proudly celebrate our nation’s milestone! I remember the Bi-Centennial in 1976 and the celebrations that occurred for our 200year mark, and realize my grandchildren will see the Tri-Centennial in 2076. It is amazing the challenges our great country has endured and grown through. I can’t help but wonder what my two great-great grandfathers that fought in the Army of the Potomac in the Civil War would think about our lifestyles and possessions today, and where our state and country are today culturally, after living the sacrifice of that war. It is amazing to realize that no matter what we feel is wrong in our state or country today, we still live in the greatest experiment in self-government ever attempted.

June was a month of graduations and celebrations throughout our county. Congratulations to all the graduates as they move on to college or employment or both! Congratulations to the parents and families that successfully shepherded their children to the monumental achievement of high school graduation! Here at the Sheriff’s Office we hosted and taught a regional Course in Corrections Supervision, with students from Allegany, Chemung, Livingston, Seneca, Tompkins and Steuben County Sheriff’s Offices. With the NYS Sheriff’s Institute we hosted the HEROES Week course at Keuka College, in which first responders from Albany County to Chautauqua County, and everywhere in between, learned peer support skills, coping skills and the FBINAA Officer Resiliency train the trainer curriculum. Lieutenant Kennedy of our agency completed the course and is leading our wellness committee at the Sheriff’s Office. On June 25th we partnered with NYS DOT and the NYSP in “Operation Hardhat” providing traffic enforcement at a road construction site near Hornell. On June 5th Deputy Butler represented our agency at the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics in Utica. Our Honor Guard led both the Dairy Festival Parade in Bath and the Colonial Days Parade in Painted Post.

June brought another busy month for our agency. We celebrated the retirement of School Resource Officers Michael Case, Vincent Hill and William Baker. Thank you for your service and enjoy your next chapters! In the Corrections Division, Sergeants Towner and Waight completed their 64-hour Corrections Supervisor Course. Officer Kendra Gay completed the 16-hour Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) in Allegany County. Officer Eighmey instructed the ALERRT 1 course at the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy. In other training sessions, Lieutenant Kennedy completed the HEROES week training. Deputies Hedges and Nadjadi completed the FBI Crisis Negotiation Course. Civil Clerk Yarka and Deputy Phelps completed the Child Passenger Safety Training.
Sheriff Allard presented on Frankly Speaking, The Pulse and attended the National Sheriff’s Association Conference.

All of our deputies and officers performed in an outstanding fashion, and we received multiple commendations from the public regarding their outstanding performance.
We continue to pray for our first responder colleagues and deployed military across the globe, as well as their families. We also pray for the victims of mass casualty events and state sponsored aggression. Thank you for supporting the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office in these challenging times and stay safe!
