The Hornell Steamers saw their 2026 season come to a close Sunday afternoon, falling to the Genesee Rapids 10-2 in the Western Division Wild Card matchup at Maple City Park.
Genesee jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the opening inning behind an RBI double from Gage Wheaton, an RBI groundout by Luis Tumero, and a bases-loaded walk to Logan Hoyt. The Rapids added another run in the third and one more in the fourth to build a 5-0 advantage.
The Steamers answered in the bottom of the fourth inning. John Greenwood (North Park) started the rally with a single before Will Parker (Pomona Pitzer) doubled down the left field line. Luke Manders (Kalamazoo) brought Greenwood home with a sacrifice fly, and Taylor Joseph (North Park) followed with an RBI triple to right field to trim the deficit to 5-2.
Hornell’s pitching staff settled in after the early damage. Micah Marvin (SUNY Niagara) tossed three strong innings of relief, allowing just one earned run while striking out three. Evan LaMothe (Johnson & Wales) followed with two scoreless innings, giving the Steamers an opportunity to climb back into the game.
The Rapids, however, put the game away late. Genesee scored three runs in the eighth inning and added two more in the ninth to secure the victory and advance to the next round.

Parker finished 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Joseph collected an RBI triple. Greenwood reached base three times with a single, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch, and Beno Ballard and Callum McAtee each added a hit for the Steamers.
Despite the disappointing ending, the Steamers wrapped up a memorable summer that included a return to the postseason, numerous standout individual performances, and the continued development of players from across the country.
Hornell finishes the season with a 17-16-1 record.
