From staff reporting
Hornell Red Raiders are shining in college sports. Soccer standout Wyatt Evingham who helped lead Coach Jim Tobin to a career capstone championship season, finally tasted glory as and Alfred State Pioneer:
From Alfred State Athletics,
Strong Second-Half Effort Not Enough in 2-1 Loss to Broncos
The Pioneers controlled much of the play throughout the contest, outshooting the Broncos 15-7 and holding a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Alfred State consistently pressured the SUNY Delhi defense and created several quality scoring opportunities, particularly in the second half.
SUNY Delhi opened the scoring in the 28th minute and carried a 1-0 lead into halftime despite the Pioneers controlling possession and generating several attacking chances.
The Broncos extended their lead early in the second half, finding the back of the net in the 48th minute to make it 2-0.
Alfred State responded immediately. Just three minutes later, Wyatt Evingham converted a pass from Tommy Dimaggio to cut the deficit in half and shift the momentum back toward the Pioneers. Evingham paced the Alfred State attack with five shots, including three on goal.
The Pioneers continued to push forward in search of the equalizer, generating multiple scoring opportunities as Colin Martin and Joevany Alvarez helped fuel the offensive attack.
Alfred State’s chances increased in the 77th minute when SUNY Delhi was reduced to 10 players following a red card. The Pioneers controlled much of the remaining action and spent the closing minutes applying sustained pressure in the attacking third but were unable to find the tying goal before the final whistle.
Goalkeeper Lukas Bandurski played all 90 minutes for Alfred State, making three saves and keeping the Pioneers within striking distance throughout the match.
Despite the result, the Pioneers delivered one of their strongest attacking performances of the season, controlling play for long stretches and battling until the final whistle. Alfred State will look to build on that effort as it prepares for its next conference matchup.
The Brockport Golden Eagles are raving about former Hornell football linebacker Austyn Gollnitz(#1) noting his forced turnovers and gritty tackles.
From Brockport Atheltics,
Austyn Gollnitz of the SUNY Brockport football team was just named the Empire 8 Football Defensive Player of the Week. He put together an impactful performance for the Golden Eagles in their win over Hartwick on the road in Week 4.
Gollnitz made arguably the biggest play of the game for Brockport to give the team the lead at halftime. With the game a stalemate at 0-0 through most of the first half, Gollnitz changed the entire outlook of the game to end the half. Hartwick running back Akil Williams had the ball punched out by Austyn Gollnitz, and the fumble was recovered by Brockport for a defensive touchdown.

The second-year linebacker finished with a total of seven tackles in the game, including three tackles for loss. The forced fumble for a touchdown was the cherry on top of a gritty defensive outing for Austyn. He has now forced three turnovers in the past two games for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport returns home in Week 5 to host St. John Fisher for the annual Courage Bowl. Kickoff is set for 6pm on Saturday, October 3rd at Bob Boozer Field.
