A few teams made strides to improve in the Section V Class B wrestling brackets. With teams filling out weight classes and individuals improving, it looked like Canisteo-Greenwood would have a challenge after winning four titles in a row.

The wrestlers in at Canisteo-Greenwood, now merged with Jasper-Troupsburg, worked as hard as ever in the off-season and in practice and picked up the fifth straight title.

Most impressive, all 15 wrestlers made the podium, placed and advance with a chance at a state title.

Xavier deJesus Remchuck at 118 pounds picked up a 10-0 win over a tough Cade Sands from Addison and for his efforts on the day was awarded the Class B 2 Outstanding Wrestler Award for the lower weights.

Canisteo-Greenwood dominated early and often.

At 102, Cael Stewart won a title with a first period pin of Ryder Reichert of Alexander.

At 110, Austin Hall won 6-3 over Jayden Chiccino of Williamson.

After deJesus-Remchuk’s win at 118, Gavin Bob of C-G had a major decision 9-0 win over Jacob Howe of Addison for the title.

And at 132, Colton Havens pinned Gage Wagner of Alexander at 3:16 of the second period.

Luke Kilmer had the other title at 145 with a 7-0 win over Brock Flint of Le Roy.

At 138, Lucas Mason made the finals and took second for C-G.

At 152, Braidon Woodward made the finals and took second while Keegin Christian at 160 also made the finals and took second.

The Canisteo-Greenwood coaches are Phil Stewart and Geoff Havens. They have a combined 26 years experience coaching the Canisteo Wrestling Club. Stewart was named Section V Class B2 Coach of the Year on Saturday.

“It’s a great accomplishment for our program to be able to win five consecutive titles,” Havens said. There is a lot of work that goes into earning a sectional title, and it’s even harder to repeat that level of success year after year.

“There are always a number of great teams and wrestlers in Class B2, so you’re never guaranteed results like this. These guys are extremely committed to the pursuit of their team and personal goals, and their work ethic is second to none. They invest a lot of time in their preparation, both in the regular season and in the off season.,” Havens added.

Alexander had a strong chance coming in and C-G was well aware of their team and the strong individuals in the class.

“The addition of teams like  Alexander definitely makes it tougher,” Havens said. “They are well coached and have a bunch of great wrestlers on their team. There were a lot of great individual matches between our two teams as well.

“Some that I expect we will see again this weekend at Super Sectionals. In spite of the great competition I feel like our guys are up for any challenge and demonstrated that this weekend,” he added.

Havens was proud of the 15 wrestlers advancing.

“The accomplishment that means the most to me is that all fifteen of our eligible wrestlers placed at Sectionals. I can’t say that we’ve ever been able to accomplish this before and it is a great feeling knowing that they will all advance to the Section V State Qualifier this weekend in Brockport,” he said. “It’s especially meaningful to our seniors who have been such a significant part of our success over the past few seasons.”

However, this weekend, class size and school size does not matter. The best take the mat and the truw first and second place finishers move on to states.

“We feel really good about where we are heading into Super Sectionals. Our guys are healthy and training hard to make the most of this opportunity,” Havens said. “We certainly expect some great competition, but I feel like we are primed for another great weekend.”
