After closing the Wellsville Daily Reporter building on Main Street and stopping home delivery in 2018, the Gannett Co. Inc., announced today they are also shutting down the wellsvilledaily webite.
In a twist of irony, the final nail in the Wellsville news coffin for the corporation was the only local story on the front page of the Sunday Spectator (formerly the Wellsville Daily Reporter and Hornell Evening Tribune) which can only be purchased at select stores for $2.
Today’s paper did not list a box with ownership or any local connections to the newspaper.
The change was announced by Kevin Hogan, an executive editor of Gannett’s Southern Tier websites, who is listed as an executive editor in Binghamton.
In the five paragraph press release, the Binghamton-based editor said “The local news industry has undergone significant change since the dawn of the digital news age. This merger of two websites is one of them.”
The Olean Times Herald no longer publishes a Sunday edition and is mailed daily while the Cuba Patriot (weekly) continues to print as well. Olean, like the Spectator, which is eveningtribune.com for now, has a paywall to read stories and see advertisements.
The Wellsville Sun and the Hornell Sun have no plans to merge. Both sites are free for readers to view stories, features, obituaries, local photos, sports, opinion pieces, columnists and advertisements.
