Pioneers Claim AMCC Title Ending Behrend’s 16-year Streak, Smiechowski Named Coach of the Meet

Canisteo-Greenwood’s Westin Perry breaks several records

After four successful days the Alfred State men’s swimming and diving team made history as the Pioneers captured both the overall and the AMCC title at the Allegheny Empire Swimming & Diving Championships.

The Pioneers made history by ending the Penn State Behrend’s 16-year win streak and by breaking 6 AMCC records and 10 program records throughout the four-day Championship.

Head coach Mike Smiechowski was named Coach of the Meet for his team’s success.

In the final day the 400-yard freestyle relay of Westin Perry (Canisteo Greenwood), Kellen Fletcher (Wrightstown, NJ), Luca Aldewereld (Cleveland, OH) and Jazz Widney (Tulsa, OK) broke the AMCC record and program record after winning in 3:05.12.

In the 100-yard freestyle Perry placed second and set a new AMCC record in 46.47, Aldewereld took fourth in 46.51 and Widney was fifth in 47.02.

Kellen Fletcher (Wrightstown, NJ) set a new program record after finishing third in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.70 and Patrick Roberts (East Aurora) was sixth in 1:58.96.

In the 1650-yard freestyle Henry Schafer (Warsaw/Notre Dame) finished eighth in 17:23.75 and Tanner Fixsen (Stayton, OR) was 10th in 17:27.11.

Schafer broke two program records at once. He set the 1650 free and the 1000-yard free in 10:31.17 while swimming the 1650.

Jack Friedah (York, PA/West York) finished seventh in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.65.

Austin Miller was named the diver of the meet.

AMCC RECORDS:

The 400-yard medley relay of Westin PerryStuart YatesKellen Fletcher and Jazz Widney broke the AMCC record and the program record after winning with at time of 3:26.56.

The 200-yard medley relay of Westin PerryStuart YatesJazz Widney and Luca Aldewereld broke the AMCC record after winning with a time of 1:32.10.

Aldewereld broke the AMCC record in the 50-yard freestyle after winning in a time of 20.94.

Fletcher broke both the AMCC and program record in the 100-yard butterfly after winning with at time of 50.44.

PROGRAM RECORDS:

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Kellen FletcherJazz WidneyStuart Yates and Luca Aldewereld broke the program record and won in a time of 1:24.85.

Perry broke the program record in the 100-yard backstroke after winning with a time of 50.88 and in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:45.94.

The 800-yard freestyle relay of Westin PerryKellen FletcherLuca Aldewereld and Collin Vimislik broke the program record with a time of 6:57.59.

Perry led off the relay with a time of 1:42.33 which set a new program record.
