Hornell Steamers rolling, seven in a row! (Photo gallery)

The Hornell Steamers ran their winning streak to seven games with a pair of victories over the Mansfield Destroyers on Wednesday. Hornell won the completion of a suspended game 14-0 and then took the regularly scheduled game 12-3.

On Friday before the thunderstorms moved into the area, Connor Kiefer (Monroe CC) had an RBI groundout, Ryan Hill (Mercyhurst) hit a RBI single, and Paxton Hughes (Trevecca Nazarene) collected a two-run single to make it 4-0.

Resuming in the bottom of the 4th, Hornell put the game out of reach with five runs. Colton Burd (Indiana U of PA) hit a two-run double and Jordyn Smith (Oklahoma Wesleyan) hit a three-run homer to center field.

Hughes and Burd collected RBI doubles in the 5th to make it 11-0. Bryson Rigsby (Webster) collected a RBI single and Hughes capped his big day with a two-RBI single in the 6th.

Huges was 3 for 5 with 5 RBI to lead the Steamers 16-hit attack. Smith was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI while Hill, Rigsby, Peyton Johnson (Indiana U of PA), Burd, and Kiefer all had two hits.

Braden Consaul (USC Upstate) pitched the first four innings allowing just three hits on Friday night. Quinn Weber (Webster) didn’t allow a hit in the final three innings to earn the save. He struck out four.

Hornell collected 13 more hits in the nightcap and they used a three run 4th to build a comfortable lead. They put the game out of reach with a five run 8th.

Hughes collected a RBI double in the 1st to give Hornell the early lead. After Mansfield tied the game in the 3rd, Smith hit a RBI double to give the Steamers a lead they would never give up.

In the 4th, Hill and Kiefer had RBI fielder choices and Devin Mersmann (Alfred State) scored on an error to make it 5-1. 

Torrey Roper (Indiana U of PA) hit a solo homer in the 5th and scored on a Destroyer error in the 7th. Mansfield scored a pair of runs in the 7th but never got closer.

Hughes had a two-run single in the 8th, Roper had a RBI single, and Hill drove in a run on a ground out to highlight a five run 8th.

Hughes was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI while newcomer Max Schmarder (Tusculum) was 3 for 5. Roper was 2 for 4.

Consaul allowed just one run on three hits in six innings of work to earn the win. He walked six and struck out five. Tre Slawson (Keuka) allowed one earned run in three innings of relief work to earn the save.

Hornell improves to 16-12 on the year and is back at Maple City Park on Thursday for another battle with the Dansville Gliders. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
