Playoff Bound – Steamers down Genesee

The Hornell Steamers clinched a spot in the 2022 NYCBL playoffs with a 8-7 victory vs. Genesee on Friday night. The Steamers are now 20-14 on the season with eight games remaining in the regular season.

Hornell jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the game. They scored three in the 3rd and two more in the 4th. Colton Burd (Indiana U of PA) hit a two run double and Max Schmarder (Tusculum) delivered a RBI single in the 3rd. Bryson Rigsby (Webster) hit a sac fly and Ryan Hill (Mercyhurst) stole home in the 4th.

Genesee rallied and tied the game with two runs in the 4th and three in the 5th.

The Steamers grabbed the lead in the 6th when Hill scored on a passed ball and Hughes collected a RBI fielder’s choice. Torrey Roper (Indiana U of PA) made it 8-5 in the 7th with a two-out infield single.

In the 8th, Genesee plated two and had the bases loaded when Brody Burdett (Alfred State) got the team out of the jam with an inning ending strikeout. Burdett struck out the side in the 9th to earn the save.

Connor Kiefer (Monroe CC) and Rigsby were each 2 for 4 while Schmarder was 2 for 5. Tre Slawson (Keuka) earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief.

Hornell travels to Mansfield for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
