GREIGSVILLE  – When you shoot as many threes and play an up-tempo offensive style as the Hornell girls play, sometimes your effort at the defensive end goes unnoticed.

Not Wednesday night.

Hornell improved to 2-1 on the season as the Lady Raiders turned up their defense with their 64-38 victory over defending Class C3 champion York in LCAA crossover action.

Senior forward Maddie Moore dropped in a team-high 17 points while freshman forward Payton Bentley added eight points in the victory. Both played well in the post on Wednesday.

“Our key tonight was our defensive intensity and the post play of Maddie Moore and Payton Bentley,” HHS head coach Brian Dyring said. “They did a great job defensively and rebounding  the ball.”

Lillian Hoyt and Jordyn Dyring added 12 points apiece while Selena Maldonado added nine and also played well at the defensive end with several hustle plays.

Hornell’s defensive pressure would lead them to a 34-18 second half advantage.

York was led by Rylee Cuozzo’s 17 points while Alaina Englert and Isabel Laney added six and five points respectively for the Lady Knights (0-1).Up next for Hornell is a road test Saturday against Section IV rep Waverly.
