From: Timothy D. Marshall, CEM, Director of Public Safety

Steuben County Office of Emergency Services and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office continue to monitor the winter storm which is affecting our region. The rapid drop in temperatures with blowing snow has made conditions dangerous throughout the day. Conditions have worsened during nightfall making visibility very difficult.  Primary and secondary roadways are ice covered and treacherous.  County officials are asking motorists to use extreme caution and limit travel until daybreak.

Steadier snow is expected to end this evening, but winds gusts in excess of 50 mph is causing whiteout conditions.  This has caused hazardous driving conditions as well as numerous power outages.

Based upon the forecast and current driving conditions, the Steuben County Office of Emergency Services & the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office are recommending a travel advisory for overnight. Motorists are recommended to use extreme caution while traveling if they must.  Use caution on higher elevated highways and bridges as well as along routes with open fields.  Call ahead and make sure your destination is open before traveling.  If you don’t have to travel please stay home.  This is not a travel ban.

Remember, dial 911 for emergencies only.   For statewide travel conditions call 511, or visit http://www.511ny.org/
