Are you a Harry Wormwood or a Matilda?

By Andrew Harris

Public libraries have undergone a transformation that largely mirrors the changes in our communities over the last century. One hundred years ago, the Hornell Public Library was eleven years old and books were a very valuable commodity. The industrial revolution had yet to be supercharged by world wars and automobiles were the latest technology. Society needed libraries to succeed.

In 1911 when the Hornell Common Council and Mayor F.J. Nelson accepted the library as a city asset, it was a very big deal. The idea of a public library had been sweeping the nation and philanthropists enjoyed having their family named attached. Providing a community access to books, newspapers, journals, and other emerging publications had major benefits.

The Hornell Public Library helped build the Hornell that stands today, and the Hornell community has shaped the public library over twelve decades. Today you can find great community events, programs, art shows, kids activities, and much more. A snap shot of the Hornell Public Library in 2022:

“The Library holds over 51,000 items. Books not available locally may be ordered through an extensive library network. Delivery is offered to the home-bound and nursing home residents. Large print books are available. Current magazines and newspapers are in large supply, as well as videotapes, DVDs, audio book cassettes and CDs.
