As a result of the 2022 changes in pistol permitting requirements, specifically the requirement for 16 hours of training for any pistol permit applicant, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with our local NRA and training representatives to meet this need through a collaborative effort.

The Sheriff’s Office, for the foreseeable future, will provide only the first eight hours of the instruction, covering use of force, de-escalation of force, signs of depression and suicidal ideations, safe home and vehicle storage and interacting with law enforcement. Instruction provided in the first half by the Sheriff’s Office is free of charge.

The second eight hours, provided by NRA instructors as private vendors, will cover shooting safety, fundamentals, nomenclature, stance, grip and actual shooting. Charges for the instruction provided in the second half will be at the discretion of the vendor.

Any person applying for the permit will need certification of completion of the entire 16 hours of training. This can also be achieved through approved vendors for the entire 16 hour training at a cost set by the individually approved vendors.
