The Raiders play tonight at Wayland-Cohocton

The Hornell Red Raiders won their third straight game and improve to 13-4 after a 76-61 win in Livonia Friday night.  The Raiders sit at the top of the Class B2 standings and the Livingston County Division 1 standings going into the final two weeks of the regular season.

The visiting Raiders got off to a quick 9-0 start, but the Bulldogs followed suit with 9 unanswered points of their own and found themselves up by one at the end of the quarter.  The lead changed hands throughout the second quarter until the Raiders were able to account for 8 unanswered points nearing halftime.  Hornell led 38-32 at the half.

The Red Raiders came out strong in the second half and maintained the lead the remainder of the game to come out on top 76-61.  “I thought the boys played really well at the offensive end of the floor,” said Hornell coach Kirk Scholes.  “We shared the ball and got great movement off the ball.  A lot of guys stepped up and played well.  We can be a really good offensive team when we are playing with pace and the ball is moving early.”

PJ Picco had a team high 19 points and a game high 7 rebounds on the night.  Gennaro Picco followed with 18 points and 5 assists.  Gates Miller (10), Wyatt Evingham (9), Shawn Rose (9), and Wyatt Argentieri (8) also played big roles offensively for the Raiders.

“In the first half, I thought Wyatt Evingham gave us a big jolt,” continued Scholes.  “He came in composed and made a bunch of plays.  He’s getting better and better.  We are going to need him down the stretch of the season.”  Evingham led the team with 3 steals in the win.

“We also had big performances from PJ, Gennaro, and Gates.  PJ and Gates played with an aggressiveness.  I felt like both were in attack mode all night.  The kids had some extra energy tonight, and I’m hoping we can bottle that for the rest of the season,” commented Scholes.

Livonia’s Connor Feehan and Chris Coyle each netted 21 points to lead all scorers.  Feehan’s points included six 3s.

“We have three games left.  We need to continue to grow as a group.  Everyday is important, and we need to understand the importance of winning the day.  We need to attack these next two weeks with the mindset of getting better,” concluded Scholes.

In JV news, Hornell beat Livonia 59-39.  Marco Picco led all scorers with 17 points, and Kellen Crowe was right behind with 15 points in the win.  The Bulldogs’ K. O’Connor and B. Amodeo chipped in 13 and 12 respectively.

The Red Raiders travel to Way-Co on Tuesday and Dansville on Friday before hosting the final regular season game next Wednesday.
