The Hornell Red Raiders won their 4th straight road game Friday night beating the #2 seeded Dansville Mustangs 68-50 in a Livingston County matchup.  Friday’s win brings the Raiders to 15-4 and secures the #1 seed in Class B2 with one final home game before sectional play begins.

After some back-and-forth action between the two teams in the first quarter, the Red Raiders were able to pull ahead by 10, leading 38-28 at halftime.  “The kids came out very focused.  We had a strong start against a good opponent,” said Hornell coach, Kirk Scholes.  “I thought we did a good job of getting the game to be played at the pace we wanted.  We executed well and had a lot of guys contribute.”  Hornell  had the momentum in the third quarter, scoring 20 points while holding the Mustangs to just 5.  Scholes continued, “The third quarter may have been our best quarter all year.  I loved the energy we played with.  I thought the three guards were fantastic all night.”

“Gennaro was great all night,” commented Scholes.  “I thought he controlled the game.  When he’s living at the rim and gets into a rhythm offensively, he’s one of the best guards around.  We all know he’s the first guy mentioned on everybody’s scouting report.  He just needs to continue to read the defense and make the right play.”  Picco led all scorers with 22 points, including going 8 for 10 at the free throw line.  He also had 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Senior guard, Shawn Rose, led all players with 7 rebounds and 6 steals on the night.  He had 5 assists and scored 14 points of his own.  “Shawn made plays all over the court,” said Scholes.  “He’s such a good athlete, and tonight may have been his best game of the year.  We need him to continue to be aggressive off the bounce and be one of our anchors defensively.”

“Gates is playing super right now,” continued Scholes.  “He’s one of our X factors.  When he’s playing well, I think our team becomes special!  He does a lot of little things.  Over the last couple weeks, I’ve seen him pick up his level of play.  I’m excited for him coming down the stretch into the playoffs!”  Miller scored 16 points and had 5 rebounds.

Collin Gray led the Mustangs with 15 points and had the game high 7 assists, while Ethan Canfield and Dawson Wadsworth were right behind with 12 points apiece.

Hornell’s final regular season game will be played at home on Wednesday against Wayland-Cohocton at 7pm.
