Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned player, chess lessons can be beneficial to help improve your game. Consider taking group lessons. This can be a terrific way to make new friends who are also interested in chess, and you can learn from each other as you progress. Make sure the coach is experienced and has a good understanding of the game. They should be able to help you find your weaknesses and give you tips on how to improve.

Quasar Hampton has been teaching chess for over 10 years. Quasar is originally from New York City and came to the Southern Tier to attend Alfred where he obtained his B.A. in Business Administration. In the spring of 2018, he started the Chess Club at Alfred University. He has taught chess at the Box of Books in Alfred, the Hornell YMCA, and now he is teaching chess at the Hornell Public Library. Every Thursday from 6pm – 7pm is lessons and then they play games to practice their new skills. Quasar also hosts Chess Tournaments on the 3rd Saturday of every month – previously held at the Hornell YMCA, the new location and time is to be determined.

When asked why he teaches chess, his reply was, “To promote chess in Western New York.”

I stayed to take a lesson and was surprised at how much I learned in my very first class! Quasar made learning chess fun! I will continue to attend and learn how to play!

A couple of suggestions: 1. Have realistic expectations. Chess is a complex game that takes time and practice to master. Don’t expect to become a grandmaster overnight! 2. Be patient and have fun. Learning chess should be enjoyable, so don’t get too frustrated if you do not catch on right away.

It is supposed to be a game!
