Drug busts, welfare fraud arrests dominate the end of February

Search Warrant, Possession and Sales of Methamphetamine Arrest

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on February 22, 2023, Deputies and Investigators of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence on Hornby Road in the Village of Painted Post, New York, following a two month investigation of narcotics sales in that area. Recovered in the search was almost two ounces of suspected crystal methamphetamine, valued at approximately $1,600, a shotgun and assorted paraphernalia. Arrested was Joseph R. Hetlan, age 41, of Hornby Road, Painted Post. It is alleged that on Mr. Hetlan possessed and sold illegal stimulants and methamphetamine. Mr. Hetlan was charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree, a class A Felony, Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a class B Felony and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a class B Felony. Mr. Hetlan was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released.

Sheriff Allard thanks the Village of Bath Police Department, City of Corning Police Department and Village of Painted Post Police Department for their assistance in this investigation, search and arrest.

Felony Filing a false instrument

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on February 21, 2023, Deputies and Investigators of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Matthew K. Youngs, age 40 of Bath New York.

It is alleged that on 6/28/2022, Mr. Youngs offered a false instrument for filing to the Steuben County Department of Social Services.

An Arrest Warrant for Mr. Youngs was issued out of the Village of Bath Court. Mr. Youngs was charged with Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the first degree, a class E felony. Mr. Youngs was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office.

Misuse of Food Stamps, Petit larceny Arrest

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on February 21, 2023, Deputies and Investigators of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested a male, age 31 of Bath. It is alleged that on 06/12/2022, the man used another person’s benefit card issued by the Steuben County Department of Social Services. As a result, He obtained benefits which he was not entitled nor authorized to receive. The Bath NY man is charged with Misuse of Food Stamps and Petit Larceny. He will appear in the Village of Bath Court at a later date.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office.

Grand Larceny, Felony Filing a False Instrument

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on February 16, 2023, Investigators of the Steuben County Sheriff’s office arrested Katrina L. Sobolewski, age 45 of Bridge Street in the City of Corning.

It is alleged that from 12/01/2020 to 08/31/2022 Ms. Sobolewski offered a false instrument for filing to the Steuben County Department of Social Services and received benefits from the Steuben County Department of Social Services in the amount of $4410.00 that she was not eligible to receive.

Ms. Sobolewski is charged with Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the first degree, a class E felony and Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a class D felony. Ms. Sobolewski was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office.
